John 3:16
John 3:16 is a famous Bible passage. It is most likely the best known in the entire Bible, especially the King James Version rendition:
“ | For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. | ” |
The context of the verse is the visit by Nicodemus, a Pharisee, to Jesus (at night, not wanting to incur the wrath of his fellow Pharisees).
As one of the most famous passages in the Bible, and its call to salvation, it has appeared in many media forms (e.g. signs at sporting events).
Tim Tebow publicized this verse as a football player, and it became associated with him. In his dramatic upset playoff victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2012, the massive television audience learned that:[1]
“ | During the game [Tim Tebow] threw for 316 yards, [his] yards per rush were 3.16, [his] yards per catch were 31.6, the ratings for the game was 31.6 and the time of possession was 31.6. | ” |
As a result, 90 million people googled John 3:16 due to Tim Tebow and it was the #1 trending item on Twitter and Facebook.
