José Carreras is a Spanish singer who was born in 1946 in Barcelona and is one of the three tenors. Carreras is noted for his lyricism and purity of tone. He had outstanding collaborations in concert with Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti and Spanish tenor Plácido Domingo.

Among the opera works with which he is most identified are Un ballo in maschera by Giuseppe Verdi, Tosca and La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini, Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo, and Werther by Jules Massenet. Before his career was interrupted by his (successful) struggle with leukemia he was the "tenor of choice" for the great conductor, Herbert von Karajan.
