Madison County, Illinois is named after James Madison and is the most populated county in southern Illinois. It is ranked 8th in population among all the counties in Illinois. Madison County is ranked by Niche as the 13th best county overall to live in Illinois.[1]
The population of Madison County declined by 2% between 2010 to 2022, when it totaled 263,864.[2] The population of Illinois statewide has declined for 10 straight years.[3]
The annual budget for this County for Fiscal Year 2023 (approved in November 2022) was $183 million.[4]
Its largest number of school districts (13) is in Alton.
Many of the residents of Madison County commute across the Mississippi River to Missouri for jobs.
County Board
The governance of Madison County is by its County Board, which is comprised of 26 districts plus a Chairman. As of June 2024, a total of 19 of the Board members (including its Chairman) is Republican, and only 8 are Democrats.[5]
Politics
The county began shifting Republican in 2012, and by 2020 Donald Trump carried the county by 55-42%. In 2022, the county voted for the Republican candidate for governor, even he lost statewide by a large margin.
