Marcus Garvey (1887–1940) founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA-ACL). Born in Jamaica, Garvey became famous as a proponent of the Back-to-Africa movement, encouraging African Americans and other members of the African diaspora to return to Africa.
