Matthew Hansen Mead, known as Matt Mead (born March 11, 1962), is a Republican politician who served two terms as the Governor of Wyoming from 2011 to 2019. He is a grandson of former Governor and United States Senator Clifford P. Hansen of Wyoming.
His mother, Mary Elisabeth Hansen Mead Steinhour (1935-1996), was a rancher, businesswoman, and the unsuccessful Republican gubernatorial nominee in 1990. She was crushed in a horse accident while working cattle on her 61st birthday.[1]
In 2014, Mead won re-nomination to his second term by easily defeating the more conservative challenger, Superintendent of Public Instruction Cindy Hill. In 2013, Mead began a lengthy legal dispute in which he tried to force Hill out as the state superintendent.
