Mississippi Squirrel Revival

Mississippi Squirrel Revival is a novelty song by Ray Stevens. Though included on one of Stevens' albums, it was not planned to be released as a single, until the best of the public recognized its quality and message.

The singer tells of visiting relatives in Pascagoula, Mississippi during the summer. One summer, he catches a wild squirrel and sneaks it into Sunday services at the "First Self-Righteous Church". The squirrel escapes its enclosure and begins to attack a male parishioner (making the congregation believe he has either been demon possessed or touched by the Holy Spirit), while "Sister Bertha Better-Than-You" watches the events "with sadistic glee".

The squirrel then attacks Bertha, with surprising results: she begins to confess to all manner of sins, including affairs with other members ("and then she started naming names!"). The events lead the congregation into Christian revival. Recounting on the events, the singer considers it one of God's miracles.
