Operation Unthinkable was a plan drawn up by British Military leaders and presented to UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill on the 22 May 1945, three weeks after German Führer Adolf Hitler killed himself in a Berlin bunker fighting Red Army troops and barely two weeks after Nazi forces surrendered. It was a plan for a surprise attack on the Soviet Union, a British and American ally in the war against Nazi Germany.

The overall stated political objective was to impose upon Russia the will of the United States and British Empire. The proposed date for the opening of hostilities was July 1, 1945. The plan stated that Great Britain and the United States would have full assistance from the Polish Armed Forces in the West and could count upon the use of German manpower and what remained of German industrial capacity. The plan stated that "a total war is necessary", and that the authors of the plan were "not competent to express an opinion" on "the chances of revolution in the USSR and the political collapse of the present regime".
