Salvador Allende was was born July 26, 1908, in Valparaiso. Allende was a member of the [[Socialist Party of Chile]].  Allende, representing a coalition of [[Marxist]] parties won election (see:http://foia.state.gov/Reports/ChurchReport.asp) to the Presidency of [[Chile]] in 1970. He received a [[plurality]] of 36.3 percent of the vote.

Whether he was "[[democratically elected]]" has been hotly debated ever since.
