Located in [[Nepal]], on the Nepal- [[Tibet]] border, it is part of the [[Himalaya]] mountain range. It was first climbed by [[Sir Edmund Hillary]] and [[Tenzing Norgay]] on May 29th, 1954.  Although sometimes attributed to Hillary, the quotation on why he was climbing Everest, "Because it's there," was actually said by [[George Mallory]], who, with his partner Andrew Irving, attempted Everest in 1924.  They were unsuccessful in their attempt, and both died on the mountain.
