Edge is controversial because Microsoft has historically tried to dominate over other vendors by not following industry standards.  An exception to this is Microsoft's promotion of [[HTML 5]] as a standard over the widely used [[Adobe Flash]] plug-in for sharing and displaying video content.  The anniversary version of Edge introduced in 2016 will disable Flash until a user enables it and will disable automatic playing of embedded flash videos.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/04/08/microsoft_disables_flash_in_edge/|title=Microsoft drives an Edge between Adobe and the web: Flash ads blocked|date=April 8,2016|accessdate=April 10, 2016|work=The Register}}</ref>
