Eddie Redmayne portrays Einar Wegener, a landscape artist who stands in for a female model who no-showed for a planned painting made by Wegener's wife, Gerda. Einar, who has undergone gender confusion for years, snaps as a result of the modeling sessions where he stands in as "female" and he begins claiming to be a "woman" calling himself "Lili Elbe", which nearly leads to him being committed to an asylum. Einar later undergoes surgical mutilation to accommodate his delusion, but he dies of infection due to the mutilation.
