Ford discontinued the Taurus briefly in 2007.  The last model was purchased by [[American Hero]] [[Truett Cathy]], owner of [[Chick-fil-A]].  But due to popular demand Ford brought it back later that year.

The SHO (Super High Output) was a high performance model of the Taurus.  It featured a high-output V6 engine (actually built by the Yamaha motorcycle company, but with American engineering help).  For its time it was very competitive and could actually beat many imports at a fraction of their cost.  In the 1990s it was replaced by a V8 model which was slower than the original and lacked have an option for a standard transmission.  A new turbocharged SHO is out now and it is back to form again beating imports for half the cost.

In 2011, Ford put the Taurus Police Interceptor into production to replace the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. It was a Taurus SHO, but with some trim elements removed and police-spec components installed. Despite the better performance, the new model was less liked by the police departments than the Crown Victoria, due to a less durable construction.
