The SHO (Super High Output) was a high performance model of the Taurus.  It featured a high-output V6 engine (actually built by the Yamaha motorcycle company, but with American engineering help).  For its time it was very competitive and could actually beat many imports at a fraction of their cost.  In the 1990s it was replaced by a V8 model which was slower than the original and lacked have an option for a standard transmission.  A new turbocharged SHO is out now and it is back to form again, beating imports at a lower cost.
