:Yes, that's why Islam is a political movement. It's as Toynbee says, if a Sanhedrin or Roman procurator existed in Mohammad's time, he would have been lynched on a cross, too. RobSThe coup plotters won, for now 19:35, 4 May 2017 (EDT)

:Also, Persian or Roman empire? The Persian Empire collapsed about the time of Alexander the Great, some 1400 years prior. The Arabian Penninsula always laid on the outskirts of any of the world's great powers - until oil was discovered. As a sort of no-mans-land, like Afghanistan in the 1990s, it was the perfect place to organize a resistance or competition with any of the other rising movements or powers in the world, which at that time was Christianity. I'm of the opinion that was a driving motive of Mohammad. Christianity spread outdide Jerusalem for several centuries, and was making inroads among the diverse tribes of the Arabian penninsula. Mohammad organized the tribes to check it in its tracks by violent jihad. Islam's origins are a  reaction to the growth and spread of Christianity. ::The Sasanian empire (Neo-Persian empire). I just had the name wrong. The dates don't exactly align, but they're pretty close. Another theory that I personally think is correct is that Islam grew out of a heretical sect of Christianity, not so much as a competition or resistance to Christianity. Well, it would have ended up in competition with Christianity, but I don't think it formed as a reaction to Christianity. Probably just out of a heretical sect.
