|Based upon the Broadway play by communist sympathizer Arthur Miller, this historical revisionist drama is an allegory intentionally written to compare the Christians of the Salem Witch Trials to the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) and comparing those accused of witchcraft to the communists HUAC hunted, ultimately spreading the idea that American communists of the Cold War era were helpless "victims" of HUAC.

In real history, John Proctor, one of the accused, was reported as living a “Christian life in his family and was ever ready to help such as they stood in need”, but in the film, he confesses to being a witch and publicly denounces God.
