IMO, Bernie just flung the term "Democratic Socialist" out there, when asked by reporters to describe his views, without knowing or understanding it. This by no means is unique in history. But it's built up major movement poised to take over the DNC when Pelosi and company kick off.

Bernie simply wanted to associate himself with the more extreme [[Marxist-Leninist]] survivors of the [[McCarthy era]], differentiate himself as more militant than liberal Democrats, and didn't want to debate the pros and cons of European social democracy either cause he's unknowledgeable or felt it detracted from building a socialist movement in America.

I'll bet a $100 Sanders decision to run was a last minute decision (all indications are he had no intention to run) after (1) Trump's SOTU and the positive response Trump got by his attack on socialism, and (2) the Ocasio-Cortez/Amazon fiasco.
