This article is not written by a conservative, as far as I know, but it argues (correctly, I think) that the Left is the cause of the rise of right-wing populism: [https://quillette.com/2019/05/27/how-progressivism-enabled-the-rise-of-the-populist-right/] --[[User:1990'sguy|1990'sguy]] ([[User talk:1990'sguy|talk]]) 02:49, 28 May 2019 (EDT)

:FWIW, I'd be careful about marrying conservative trends to the term "[[populism]]." The term from its origins, more than a century and a quarter ago, has always carried a pejorative connotation meaning something like "simpleton" or "naive." It was always associated with the left and Progressivism, until the rise of the Christian Right and Reagan Democrats. In the 1990, leftwing academics coined the term "Rightwing Populism" to acknowledge the New Deal and Great Society coalitions were losing their grip on "uneducated" voters.

:IMO, embracing the phrase "rightwing populism" is close to conservatives calling themselves "fascist," cause that is what leftists, who coined the phrase, intended it to be.
