FWIW, I'd be careful about marrying conservative trends to the term "populism." The term from its origins, more than a century and a quarter ago, has always carried a pejorative connotation meaning something like "simpleton" or "naive." It was always associated with the left and Progressivism, until the rise of the Christian Right and Reagan Democrats in the 1980s. In the 1990s, leftwing academics coined the term "Rightwing Populism" to acknowledge the New Deal and Great Society coalitions were losing their grip on "uneducated" voters.

IMO, embracing the phrase "rightwing populism" is close to conservatives calling themselves "fascist," cause that is what leftists, who coined the phrase, intended it to be.

As the American term "rightwing populism" has been imported into the European and Canadian lexicon in recent years, the label "proto-fascist" has been carried with it.

Good idea! I had not thought of that before because I just wanted to express my thoughts on the section, but this has turned out to be a whole lot longer than I thought it would be.
