Around 2:25 a.m., near the Rigolets Bridge east of New Orleans, the car plowed into the back of a tractor-trailer (which it could not see as a mosquito truck, ahead of the trailer, was spraying and caused a dense fog) and slid underneath the trailer. The three adults in the front seat were killed instantly. The children survived with minor injuries.  As a result of the accident, tractor-trailers are now equipped with bars to prevent a similar accident; the bars are called Mansfield bars.

Contrary to the urban legend, Mansfield was not decapitated in the accident.
