There are three paths one can take: (1) reject God, become an atheist, and think you can improve yourself or work out your own salvation (in this sense, salvation does not refer to the hereafter. Salvation begins the moment a person is spiritually born).  This is just Pride, or original sin coming to full fruition. (2) Hear the word of God but never do anything about it. These people a genuinely serious about wanting salvation from sin (in this life) but don't quite trust or believe God that he is serious about his promises. It's a lack of faith.
