Embryonic stem cell research is the utilization of surplus discarded embyros from fertility clinics in order to divide in a laboratory culture and produce specialized cells supposedly to treat disease. A common misconception perpetuated by persons with misguided religious motivations is that human embyros are cultivated and destroyed intentionally for stem cell research.

Adult stem cell research is similar except it does not use or destroy embryos, and instead is based on extra stem cells that can be taken without harm. These cells so far have proven less potent than those harvested from discarded embryos, but they are preferable due to the stigma that embyronic stem cells have in the "country bumpkin" demographic of US voters.

Stem Cell research and derivatives (such as cloning therapy) hold the potential to secure america's lead in medicinal technology over countries such as China, but conservative religious notions hold America back from out-competing China in this field.
