This beast with the mark of the beast is very common.  (By passage I mean the whole chapter. There is no reference to a "Great Beast" anywhere in the chapter.) Go back to verse 18: ''Here is wisdom. Elsewhere the same author John tells us that anti-Christ is a spirit, not a fleshly beast, as well as anti-Christ is already here, and most specifically, "whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ, this is the spirit of Anti-Christ". Antichrist is not one specific individual or entity. Antichrists are everywhere. They may be members of your own family.  Again, something is being read into the text that is not there.
