[[L. Brooks Hays]], a [[segregation]]ist though racial moderate from [[Arkansas]], ran for re-election in the [[1958 Midterm Elections|1958 midterms]]. After refusing to take either side in the Little Rock crisis, staunch segregationist Dale Alford challenged him in the general election as a nominal [[Independent voters|Independent]] running on Democrat credentials. Alford's write-in campaign ultimately denied Hays re-election by a narrow margin.
