Xi Zhongxun was purged in 1962 and imprisoned, and his mother, Qi Xin, forced into hard labor years before the Cultural Revolution began.  The children were forced to denounce their father and sent to the countryside to be re-educated and suffer deprivation. Xi's older sister, Qi Qiaoaqiao, was forced to study Marxism. His older half sister by one of his father's previous marriages, Xi Heping, committed suicide by hanging herself.  This was turning point in Xi's life.  He decided to restore his family's name, not through revenge, but through loyalty to the Communist party.
