In the [[United States]] ethanol is most commonly made through the fermentation of corn. Other countries, such as [[Brazil]], use [[sugarcane]] as a [[feedstock]] for the production of ethanol. Currently, the US has the highest production numbers for ethanol in the world, but some analysts forecast China as being a potential world player in the ethanol market. ==Use as a motor fuel==
 +
Ethanol is sold as a motor fuel in two main mixtures:
 +
*The most common is as a mix of 85% gasoline and 15% ethanol, with an octane rating of 88 (as such, it is branded as "Unleaded 88" or "E15" among others), and commonly sells for a few cents less than regular 87 octane gasoline.  It can be used in most gasoline-powered engines.
 +
*A newer mix has ethanol as the primary ingredient, between 51% and 83%, with gasoline as the remainder (often branded as "E85" and commonly called "flex-fuel").  This can only be used in certain automobile engines specifically manufactured for flex-fuel use (generally engines manufactured in 2001 or later) but not in older ones or on other gasoline-powered engines such as for lawn mowers.  This mix commonly cells for far less than regular 87 octane gasoline.
