'''The Royal Ripper''' - in 1976 a book was published with the theory that Prince Albert Victor (grandson of [[Queen Victoria]], and in direct line to the throne, had secretly married Mary Kelly and that the Queen had ordered Dr. William Gull to remove Mary and all who knew of the marriage. Subsequent variants of this theory had Dr. Gull doing the killings, without the knowledge of the Queen; a Masonic conspiracy to protect the throne; and even the Prince as the murderer, in fits of madness brought on by [[syphilis]]. These theories were quickly, and easily debunked, but remain popular due to their gossipy quality and the use of the theory in some popular movies.
