It was not a "spontaneous" outburst, in fact many non-Jews were outraged by it, <ref>Nelson, Walter Henry. The Berliners, their saga and their city. New York: D. McKay Company, 1969. The morning after the Kristallnacht , Hans Werner Lobeck, today a Berlin official, passed the still - burning wreck of the Central Synagogue on Fasanenstrasse. A crowd of Berliners were watching outside a Jewish - Hungarian re[s]taurant the "Czardas," on Kurfürstendamm. Storm Troopers who had just demolished the place emerged with dozens of bottles of fine Tokay wine; on impulse, they suddenly decided to give these to "some of the old Berliners." As they proffered their loot, says Lobeck, a shudder went through the crowd and it fell back. The people dispersed, leaving the S.A. men alone on the sidewalk . An hour later, Lobeck encountered another Kurfürstendamm crowd; this one behaved differently.

Jews throughout Germany and Nazi territories were attacked in a massive, coordinated pogrom. Over 7,500 Jewish storefronts were smashed, littering the streets with broken glass, giving the event its name. Nearly 300 synagogues were burned down. Several hundred men, women and children were dragged out of their homes and brutalized, at least 91 murdered. Up to 30,000 men were arrested and sent to concentration camps. Many European and American Jews understood it was an augur of things to come. Two months later, in January 1939, Hitler gave a speech at the Reichstag threatening "the annihilation of the Jewish race in Europe."</blockquote>

It formed a circle around an old woman moaning next to a man who lay bleeding on the sidewalk. "My husband needs a doctor!" she cried, but the men around her just taunted and mocked her and even deliberately prevented her from reaching the phone booth on the corner.

Lobeck recognized the couple as Jewish owners of a corner shop. Evidently the man had been dragged out and beaten.

Whether the mob around him consisted of "average Berliners," Lobeck could not tell ; they might have been Storm Troopers in civilian clothes , for many S.A. men donned "Räuberzivil" .. for the Kristallnacht to attribute the destruction to "Volkszorn," or "public fury."</font></blockquote></ref> though Gobbles and co. sure wanted the German people to think it was.
