A [[terrorist]] group which aims to create an independent [[Basque country]] in northern [[Spain]]. It was founded in 1959, and is responsible for approximately 900 killings, including a number of political and law enforcement figures.

The group declared a "permanent ceasefire" on March 22 2006. Since then there have been several illegal acts by ETA such as the bombing of [[Madrid]] [[Barajas]] international airport in which two people died.  Notwithstanding this ETA claims its ceasefire is still in force - an opinion which is rejected by the Spanish government.
