Ardern came to power quickly and but not without controversy.  During the 2017 New Zealand election the Labour Party had elected Andrew Little to run as the leader and potential Prime Minister; however, Little, who was a former labor union boss, suffered in that he had very little charisma, was not eloquent and had difficulty sloughing off the "union boss" public perception.  A few weeks before the election, with Labour tanking in the polls, Little suddenly stepped down and Ardern was promoted to leader.  While Ardern had little executive experience, she was young, attractive and well-spoken which contrasted against the dour Little and older opposition leader, Bill English. The polls swung towards Labour but not far enough to guarantee an outright victory.  Due to her ties with Communist [[China]], Ardern was the only leader of the Five Eyes countries to not condemn the Hong Kong crackdown.<ref>[https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9523165/Chinas-communist-regime-celebrates-Jacinda-Ardens-drift-away-Five-Eyes.html China's communist regime celebrates Jacinda Ardern's attempts to drift away from Five Eyes intelligence network - as Beijing heaps praise on the 'cooperative' New Zealand leader]</ref>

As late as 2022, Ardern insisted her regime was "your single source of truth."<ref>https://rumble.com/v1vxdam-jacinda-ardern-we-will-continue-to-be-your-single-source-of-truth..html</ref><ref name="single-source-of-truth"/>
