Although apparently not an attorney, Birdwell was quickly appointed by [[Texas]] Lt. Gov. [[Dan Patrick]] to be the chairman of the rules committee in order to deny [[Ken Paxton]] a fair trial in the Texas Senate in the summer of 2023.
