Deny a baseless rape accusation and it could cost you $83 million, if we go by the recent E. Jean Carroll ruling. Why didn't Carroll sue Trump for over the alleged sexual assault? That was back in the 1990s. Carroll didn't bring the issue up in public until 2016, by which time the statute of limitations had passed. She brought it so she could put Trump and a list of "hideous men." It was a gimmick to promote her book. There is no evidence for the allegations beyond Carroll's say so, and she has changed her story more than once over the years.

In short, Carroll is misusing the libel law as a way to get around the statute of limitations. Its absurd that she could end up making more money this way than could have if she had followed the statute.
