In terms of GDP per capita, Ukraine ranked last among European countries. By 2021, Ukraine showed the highest level of corruption among European countries.

Ukraine’s 'Orange Revolution' (2004) and 'Euromaidan' or 'Revolution of Dignity' (2014) both started at the central 'Maidan' square in Kiev, as had the earlier
'Revolution on Granite' (1990), and the word maidan is nowadays often applied to any massive anti-government street protests not only in Ukraine but in other post-Soviet countries as well.
