On 31 July, Starmer responded to the "far-right" riots by using the scenes as a pretext for [[Orwellian]] curtailments of civil liberties and the establishment of a surveillance state. Of the tools being deployed to curtail rioting, Starmer specifically named "wider deployment of facial recognition technology, and preventative action: criminal behaviour orders to restrict their movement, before they can even board a train". The response was condemned by civil liberties groups including Big Brother Watch, who described the the Prime Minister's words an "alarming pledge" that "threatens rather than protects democracy".<ref name="bigbrotherbreitbart">[https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2024/08/02/big-brother-watch-civil-liberties-group-raises-alarm-on-starmer-using-anti-stabbing-riots-pretext-to-roll-out-facial-recognition-cameras/ Big Brother Watch: Civil Liberties Group Raises Alarm on Starmer Using Anti-Stabbing Riots Pretext to Roll Out Facial Recognition Cameras]</ref>
