'''Hexham''' is a historic market town and civil parish in [[Northumberland]], England's northernmost county. It lies on the south banks of the River Tyne, close to where the North and South Tyne meet to form that river, around 25 miles west of the city of [[Newcastle upon Tyne]], Northumberland's largest settlement, and 25 miles from Carlisle in Cumberland. The Scottish border at Carter Bar is around 30 miles to the north.

The settlement dates back to at least the 7th century, when a [[monastery]] was founded on the present site of Hexham Abbey, by far the town's most prominent building, in 674 AD. The town was, between the 11th and 16th centuries, the administrative centre [[Hexhamshire]], a former county and royal liberty.
