Between 1974 and 2023, Westmorland, along with Cumberland and parts of Lancashire and [[Yorkshire]] were served by the council area [[Cumbria]], which was co-extensive with the [[county of the purposes of lieutenancy]] of that name. However, Westmorland still exists, as the Local Government Act only abolished pre-existing county councils, not the counties themselves (nor did it modify their borders). Since 2023, [[Westmorland and Furness Council]] has been responsible for Westmorland in its entirety, though the council area also covers areas of Cumberland, Lancashire and Yorkshire.
