Westmorland is a traditional county in north-west England. It borders Cumberland to the north, County Durham and Yorkshire to the east and Lancashire to the south and west. It covers an area of 786 square miles and has a population of 87,607 (2021).[1] The county town is Appleby-in-Westmorland, other towns include Windermere, Kendal, and Kirkby Lonsdale. The county is largely mountainous, containing part of the north-west Pennines and the southern and eastern parts of the Lake District. Lake Windermere, the largest lake in England, is located in Westmorland.

Westmorland is primarily a mountainous shire. Much of the south-eastern Lake District lies within the county, including Helvellyn, Westmorland's tallest mountain (or 'fell'). The county has a short coastline around the River Kent estuary, which separates the main body of Lancashire from its dethatched part to the north west.
Administration
Between 1974 and 2023, Westmorland, along with Cumberland and parts of Lancashire and Yorkshire were served by the council area Cumbria, which was co-extensive with the county for the purposes of lieutenancy of that name. However, Westmorland still exists, as the Local Government Act only abolished pre-existing county councils, not the counties themselves (nor did it modify their borders). Since 2023, Westmorland and Furness Council has been responsible for Westmorland in its entirety, though the council area also covers areas of Cumberland, Lancashire and Yorkshire.
