Russia's history stretches back over a thousand years, with rule by the Czars until [[communists]] took over the nation in 1917, and were subsequently overthrown in 1991.  Russia was the largest constituent republic of the [[Soviet Union]]. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the nation became known as the Russian Federation. Much of the vulgar, anti-Christian [[propaganda]] of the [[Bolsheviks]] against Russian culture, Russian traditions, and the Russian Orthodox Church has seeped into [[Western civilization|Western societies]] and American culture, and still plagues American media and popular perceptions with false notions and false information about modern Russia. It was the Russian people themselves, and the Russian Church, that overthrew [[Soviet communism]], not [[NATO]], the [[United States]], or the superiority of [[Western civilization]].

Despite portraying itself as now right-wing, Russia continues to maintain close ties with its left-wing Communist allies from the time of the Soviet Union, including China, North Korea, Vietnam, Cuba, and Laos, the five officially Communist countries, all of which were present at Russia's May 2025 parade, as well as at China's September 2025 parade that was termed the 'Axis of Upheaval.' Russia has received significant military aid from its Soviet-era allies including China, North Korea, and Iran, during its war against Ukraine.<ref>Guzman, C. & Jeyaretnam, M. (2025, September 3). Many of the major conflicts in the world over the past century were proxy wars where the U.S. opposed Russian attempts to spread Communist tyranny, see the Vietnam War, Chinese Civil War, Korean War, 1st and 2nd Afghan Civil War, Laotian Civil War, Angolan Civil War, etc. Russia is using mercenaries in Ukraine, the Wagner Group, that it was using to invade middle eastern and African countries to spread dictatorship while committing war crimes of rape, torture and mass killings, at times for purposes of looting Sudanese gold mines.<ref>Global Engagement Center (2024, February 8).
