Russia has made slow territorial gains at a huge cost in material and soldiers. So it does appear as if "little Ukraine" (much smaller population) did quite a bit of Russian butt kicking. In addition, Russia got caught with its pants down in the Kursk region. Plus, the Ukrainians have taken out a lot of Russian oil refinery production.
