Like all military alliances, NATO was built to protect an economic alliance or trading bloc - in this case what came to be known as the post-1945 [[EU|European Free Trade Zone]], and later on [[NAFTA]]. Largely a [[bureaucracy]], there is no [[democracy|democratically]]-elected [[parliament]] to oversee NATO's [[weapon]]'s and [[money laundering]] schemes. In the post-[[Cold War]] period is it has been referred to as "a jobs program for white guys".
