Talarico defeated in an alleged upset election against Rep. [[Jasmine Crockett]] (known for her "fake ghetto" persona; she grew up attending elite schools in [[St. Louis]]) and Ahmad Hassan (who is generally considered an "also-ran" candidate) in the March 2026 primary. Talarico was considered the front-runner in the Democrat primary until his [[racist]] comments about a primary opponent became public.<ref>https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/jasmine-crockett-vs-james-talarico-primary-turns-into-mess.html</ref> Were he to win the primary, he polls roughly even with Texas Attorney General [[Ken Paxton]] but behind Congressman [[Wesley Hunt]] and even worse against Cornyn.
