Joseph Raymond McCarthy (November 14, 1908 – May 2, 1957) was a Republican US senator who is best know for his infamous "list" of "known Communists."  He is portrayed in the movie "Good Night, and Good Luck," a film that examines the conflict between [[CBS]] anchor [[Edward R. Joseph Raymond McCarthy (November 14, 1908 – May 2, 1957) was a Republican US senator who is best know for exposing Communists who had infiltrated the American government.

McCarthy was finally censured by the Senate for inflaming hatred and fears amongst the American public. He died shortly thereafter.<ref>Fried, Richard M. (1990). Nightmare in Red: The McCarthy Era in Perspective. Oxford University Press.</ref>

McCarthy was censured by the Senate for insulting some of his colleagues. A lot of people disliked him for his anti-Communist activities.
