Tyne & Wear is a Metropolitan County established in 1974 and incorporating parts of [[Northumberland]] and [[County Durham]]. It includes the five districts [[Newcastle upon Tyne]], [[Gateshead]], [[North Tyneside]], [[South Tyneside]] and [[Sunderland]]. Tyne & Wear Metropolitan County Council was abolished on 1 April 1986, but the five authorities cooperate in the provision of certain services to the county, including passenger transport (notably the [[Tyne & Wear Metro]]), museums, and fire and civil defence.
