In 1940 he was given command of the 7th panzer division charged with spearheading the invasion of France, It proved to be his most embarrassing military campaign. After failing to break through the maginot line on the Franco/German boarder, he resorted to going through Belgium, a country that was at that time neutral, however the Belgian army surrounded and nearly destroyed his division until he was saved by lieutenant general Heinrich Khlotzmurther, commander of the 4th Panzer division, which succeeded in breaking through the Belgian forces and rescued the stricken 7th panzer division. this was covered up by goebbels, the Propaganda minister of the Nazi party.
