I was taking a glance around the Internet at various pieces of speculation on why politicians generally don't wear a beard. The best two public access articles I found were at [http://www.slate.com/id/113390/ Slate], [http://www.socialimage.net/2006_09_20_the_hill.html The Hill], and [http://thetyee.ca/Life/2006/08/09/Beards/ The Tyee] (A Canadian news site). Warning: The Canadian news site as of today has minor nudity in an ad on the sidebar. If you are offended by minor nudity then temporarily turn off images in your browser or don't visit the site to begin with.
From what the articles say, facial hair on politicians has gone in and out of fashion quite a few times in history. For instance, Lincoln started up a facial hair trend that lasted for several presidents, but facial hair went out of style again in the early 20th century. It's not at all certain exactly why people tend to prefer beard-less politicians. Hippies do make ''some'' appearance in the articles, so I've put in a toned down version of the current sentence. - [[User:PostoStudanto|PostoStudanto]] 19:24, 22 September 2007 (EDT)
