From what the articles say, facial hair on politicians has gone in and out of fashion quite a few times in history. For instance, Lincoln started up a facial hair trend that lasted for several presidents, but facial hair went out of style again in the early 20th century. It's not at all certain exactly why people tend to prefer beard-less politicians. :As a beard-wearing man myself I found those articles very interesting (and kinda sad; if I ever run for office I don't want to have to shave off my beard!). Thanks for finding them, PostoStudanto. However, they do not support the claim that politicians don't wear beards because of hippie association. The first article says that beards are ambiguous, they could represent hippies OR communists, Marxists, socialists, technophobes, anarchists, pacifists, untrustworthiness or even trustworthyness (like Abe Lincoln). It is the ambiguity that keeps politicians from wearing the beard. The second article says that it is trustworthiness that keeps politicians clean shaven. The beard hides facial expression and studies have shown that people find pictures of beardless people more trustworthy than those of bearded people. Again, thanks for the articles PS, I found them very interesting. However, if we want to keep that statement in the article we need to find a citation that explitly draw the beard-hippie relationship.
