Recent pro-democracy riots have gripped [[Burma (Myanmar)|Burma]], with widespread involvement of the [[Buddhist]] Clergy. The monks of Burma are so widely revered in their homeland that any attack on them could spark a national uprising against the dictatorship. Already comparisons have been made to the 1988 Uprising against the Military Junta, but so far the violence seems to have been attempts by the Burmese officials to disperse the growing crowds of protesters. Tougher curfew laws have been passed and the officials are beginning to crack down, but no end to the conflict seems to be far away. The Bush administration has reacted by passing trade sanctions against the tyrannous Burmese regime.

What had originally started out as protests against rising fuel prices may just evolve into a prosperous democratic future for the Burmese people.
