'''San Francisco''' is a [[liberal]] city in [[California]].  It has a higher proportion of [[homosexual]]s than any other city in the [[United States]], and in 2004, its mayor, [[Gavin Newsom]], attempted to perform [[same-sex marriage]]s despite the practice being explicitly illegal under California law.  Not surprisingly, the marriages were nullified by the courts shortly thereafter.
