He was eventually renditioned to the [[Roman Catholic]] Cardinal Beaton who held a "show trial". He was then murdered by burning at the stake on 1st March 1546 in St Andrews where he is commemmorated as a [[martyr]] to the [[faith]] on the [[Martyrs' Monument]].
