MTSU is a member of the [[Sun Belt Conference]], competing on [[NCAA]] division level 1.  Football is played at divisional level 1-A, and is sometimes played in a nationaly-televised spotlight.  The school's athletic mascot is a blue, winged horse named "Lightning", adopted in 1998.
