History
Founded in 1911, MTSU was the result of a 1909 decision by the Tennessee legislature awarding a state-funded college to each of Tennessee's distinct regions, in addition to a fourth in Nashville for African-American students:
- Eastern Tennessee Normal School, Johnson City (Eastern Tennessee State University);
- West Tennessee State Normal School, Memphis (University of Memphis);
- Middle Tennessee Normal School;
- Agricultural and Industrial State Normal School, Nashville (Tennessee State University)
Originally known for having taught the fields of education and nursing, Middle Tennessee Normal School expanded its curriculum over the years; by 1943 it had become a state college. Additional subjects plus an expansion of the campus gained it university status by 1965. Currently, MTSU is second to the University of Tennessee in size of student population; however it is the largest university in the state in the actual number of undergraduate students.
